Botox in Dentistry: More Than Just Wrinkles

When most people hear Botox, they think of smoothing forehead lines or crow’s feet. But Botox can also have a place in dentistry; and it’s not just about looking younger.

At Healthy Smiles, we’re interested in how the muscles of the face, jaw, and mouth work together. For some patients, Botox can be used as part of a treatment approach for certain dental and jaw-related concerns.

How Can Botox Help in Dentistry?

Botox works by temporarily reducing muscle activity. Depending on the muscles being treated, this may help patients who experience problems related to excessive muscle activity.

Some dental applications may include:

Jaw clenching and grinding
If you frequently clench or grind your teeth, the muscles responsible for chewing can become overworked and sore. In certain cases, Botox may help reduce the intensity of muscle contractions and decrease some of the strain placed on the jaw.

Jaw tension and facial muscle discomfort
Some patients experience chronic tightness or tenderness in the muscles around the jaw. Targeted Botox treatment may help relax these muscles and reduce discomfort.

TMJ-related symptoms
TMJ symptoms can have many different causes, so Botox isn't appropriate for everyone. However, when muscle overactivity is contributing to jaw discomfort, Botox may be one treatment option to consider.

Facial slimming
The masseter muscles are the large chewing muscles located along the sides of the jaw. When these muscles are particularly strong or enlarged from clenching, Botox can reduce their activity and, over time, create a softer or slimmer appearance along the lower face.

Is Botox Right for Everyone?

No. Botox is not a cure-all for jaw pain, TMJ disorders, or teeth grinding. Jaw symptoms can have many different causes, and the first step is understanding what is actually contributing to your symptoms.

A dental evaluation can help determine whether muscle activity may be playing a role and whether Botox could be an appropriate part of your treatment plan.

What Can I Expect?

Botox treatment involves a series of small injections into specific facial or jaw muscles. Treatment is generally quick, and most patients can return to their normal activities afterward.

Results are temporary, and treatment typically needs to be repeated periodically to maintain the effect.

Your Smile Is More Than Your Teeth

Your teeth, jaw joints, chewing muscles, and facial muscles all work together. That's why we look beyond the teeth when evaluating certain concerns.

If you're dealing with jaw tension, clenching, grinding, facial muscle discomfort, or changes in the shape of your lower face, talk with our team about whether Botox may be an appropriate option for you.

At Healthy Smiles, our goal isn't simply to treat a symptom; it's to understand the bigger picture and help you find an approach that fits your individual needs.
